Bucks County Orthopedic Specialists’ Kieran Cody M.D. Creates First and Only Outpatient Shoulder Replacement Protocol in Eastern PA Approved for an Ambulatory Surgery Center

Doylestown, Pa – Bucks County Orthopedic Specialists (BCOS) is proud to announce that Kieran Cody M.D. has developed an innovative surgical protocol that has become the first and only total shoulder replacement program approved for an ambulatory surgery center in eastern Pennsylvania. The approval was granted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Health following an extensive application and review process, and now permits these outpatient shoulder replacement surgeries to be performed at Bucks County Surgical Suites.

“We are extremely excited,” says Dr. Cody, orthopedic shoulder specialist, who pioneered the program and worked diligently to gain approval. “The process was very rigorous and included a review of our prior cases, surgical durations, rehabilitations, nursing protocols, outpatient protocols, and our complication rates – which obviously had to be next to zero. It was a comprehensive evaluation from the state and a huge endorsement for the protocol. Most importantly, it’s a huge win for BCOS patients.”

Total shoulder replacement surgery previously required an overnight hospital stay. But innovations in technology and techniques have enabled it to become an outpatient surgical procedure, allowing patients to recover in the comfort of their own homes. And now it can even be performed away from the hospital at Bucks County Surgical Suites’ state-of-the-art facility.

“There are clear cut benefits to performing the surgery at an ambulatory surgery center,” explains Dr. Cody. “First, the surgical center does not treat patients with Covid or other communicable diseases. It is a well-controlled environment designed specifically for healthy surgical patients.”

Patients can also expect an exceptional and personalized experience at the surgical center. “The entire staff is focused solely on the patient and the surgery,” Dr. Cody explains. “There are no distractions from other departments, ERs, or other patients.”

In fact, the ambulatory center staff is hand-picked by the surgeons. “We have hired the best of the best,” says Dr. Cody. “Our anesthesiologist specializes in outpatient procedures and the nurses are exceptional. We are a team. Taking care of each patient is our singular mission.”

As an added benefit, outpatient surgery in an ambulatory setting is often more affordable for patients, particularly those with high deductibles or co-payments.

“We provide cutting-edge medicine with a personalized touch to our patients and now we have expanded that capability even further,” says BCOS CEO Randall Gross. “This prestigious approval is a real ‘feather in the cap’ for Bucks County Surgical Suites and I congratulate Dr. Cody on both his single-minded pursuit of the approval and his achievement in securing it to benefit our patients.”
